More Peace, Less Chaos

Sherry Steine

Have you ever felt like your mind was spinning too fast, like a storm inside your head? Maybe your heart beats too quickly, your shoulders feel tight, or you just feel overwhelmed. I’ve felt that way too, and so have many of the people I work with. But guess what? There’s a simple way to calm that storm—your breath!

I recently worked with a small group of my clients who were feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and exhausted. They told me they wanted to feel more peaceful but weren’t sure how. So, I guided them through a few special breathing exercises to help their nervous systems relax. Afterward, every single one of them said they felt much calmer. And the best part? You can try these techniques too!

Why Is Breath So Powerful?

Our breath is like a remote control for our body. When we’re upset or scared, we tend to take short, fast breaths. But when we breathe slowly and deeply, it sends a message to our brain: "Hey, it’s okay. You’re safe. You can relax now."

The cool thing is that we can use our breath anytime, anywhere, to help us feel better. Here are a few of my favorite breath practices that I shared with my clients:

1. Belly Breathing (also called Diaphragmatic Breathing)

  • Put one hand on your belly and one hand on your chest.

  • Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, feeling your belly rise like a balloon.

  • Slowly breathe out through your mouth, feeling your belly soften.

  • Repeat this a few times.

This type of breathing helps your body relax and tells your brain to slow down. My clients loved this one because it made them feel grounded and safe.

2. 4-7-8 Breath (The Relaxing Breath)

  • Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds.

  • Hold your breath for 7 seconds.

  • Breathe out slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds.

  • Repeat a few times.

This breath is like a reset button for your body. It helps bring down stress and can even help you fall asleep faster!

3. Humming Bee Breath (Bhramari)

  • Take a deep breath in through your nose.

  • As you breathe out, make a soft humming sound like a buzzing bee.

  • Close your eyes and feel the vibration of the sound in your head.

  • Repeat a few times.

This breath is super calming, and my clients said it helped quiet their minds. Plus, the humming sound feels soothing, like a gentle hug from the inside.

The Results: More Peace, Less Chaos

After just a few minutes of breathing together, my clients noticed a huge difference. Their shoulders dropped, their faces looked softer, and they felt more at ease. One person even said, “I feel like I just took a mini vacation!”

The best part? These breathing exercises are always available. You don’t need anything special—just yourself and a few minutes to breathe.

So next time you feel stressed or overwhelmed, try one of these breath practices. You might be surprised at how quickly you feel calmer and more in control. Your breath is your superpower—use it to calm the chaos!
